Sunday Showcase: South Street Diner

Who: South Street Diner
Where: On the Corner or Kneeland and South Street
Why: Only 24 Hour Diner in the City

Sometimes it’s the little hole in the wall restaurants that provide the hometown touch service you cannot find anywhere else. That South Street Diner is the only 24 Hour food joint in Boston and the only diner to boot. It has been a late night stopping ground since 1947 and has even been featured in major motion pictures. Whether you are looking for that late night burger or early morning breakfast the South Street Diner is the place. It is smaller than more traditional diners, but packs the same punch the larger cars carry. Next time your over in the theater district, stop in and enjoy a little piece of local history.

Inside Tip: Reservations can be made between 1:00 and 5:00 AM for groups of four or more. If your traveling from out of town just remember the T stops running at 12:59 AM.

Hit the Ice!

The majority of Massachusetts is absolutely loving winter up to this point.  No snow to drive in, no driveways to shovel, no sidewalks and paths to de-ice, the list goes on and on.  While this once in a lifetime miracle season we will call it is bringing joy to everyone, a lot of annual winter activities are on hiatus so far.  The ski resorts are covered with fake powder, children aren’t getting any snow days off from school and the local hills aren’t covered for sledding and watching your friends roll down.  But one of the biggest events this winter is lacking is pond skating.  I have yet to see a frozen lake or pond in my neck of the woods and it doesn’t look like that will change anytime soon.  No ice fishing, no ice skating and certainly no pond hockey.

So what is one to do if they are itching for an outdoor skating fix?  Head into the city.  Frog Pond in the Boston Commons is one of the most historical skating rinks in the country.  Kendal Square in Cambridge transforms one of the most popular street corners into an amazing polygon shaped rink.  The Charles Hotel also has a mini outdoor rink they construct every year as well.  Even the Prudential Center opened a small sheet in 2011 with the nicest Nike Bauer rental skates I’ve ever seen.  If your out of the city, Patriot Place sets up a rink in Foxboro and our neighbors to the south open their yearly patch in the middle of Providence.

Another little known fact is the City of Boston and its surrounding communities offer many free indoor and outdoor rinks if you have your own skates.  Jamaica Plain has a great offering in the Kelly Outdoor Rink right off of the Orange Line and in the North End the Steriti Memorial Rink is an indoor complex with floor to ceiling glass walls overlooking the Zakim Bridge on the Charles.  Don’t worry they have rentals if you need them, but the ice time doesn’t cost a dime!

So get out there and lace up the blades!  Enjoy the winter festivities without the back aching labor that normally comes with it.

2011 Albums of the Year

Aside from family, friends, peace and good health there are not many things in this world that have the lasting effect and power that music does.  Whether you are getting amped up for a state championship game or taking a late night stroll through your hometown, there is always that perfect song to fit the moment.  Starting with the We The Kings concert I photographed on New Years Day all the way until today music has yet again been a big part of my life this year.  It doesn’t hurt that all the new tunes and melodies released did not disappoint.  To close out year here is my personal Top Five Albums of 2011.

Here is to the past with all of our favorite classics and to another year of great music ahead in 2012.

All the little boy was going to ask Santa for was his father to come back from Iraq. Little did he know, his wish would come true and his father was right behind Santa.

Boston Cream would like to extend a gigantic thank you to the men and women of the United States Armed Forces protecting us overseas and throughout the world, we are forever grateful for all you sacrifice and do for us.  Stay safe and we will see you soon!

2011 Acushnet Apple Peach Festival

Every town has it’s traditions and annual events where the entire population comes out to celebrate once a year. For the second year running we took part in my hometown of Acushnet, Massachusetts’, Apple Peach Festival. Each and every year the entire town and surrounding neighbors come out to enjoy the two day weekend fair with all the apple pies and peach cobbler you can handle. I would be hard pressed to leave out the gigantic blooming onions too.

Friday evening we dropped off our canopy and fixtures and arrived early Saturday morning to set up. Here is myself and my good buddy Sean from Connecticut working on getting our clotheslines set up. I was a suitemate with Sean in college up in Boston for a couple years. He offered to come down from the city to help out for the weekend like a champ.

Our booth was located a few stalls down from the stage which brought in a lot more foot traffic than expected.

Quick shot of our table display.  We have changed it up for almost every show we have done, with no exception this time around.

Another successful year in the books.  Wanted to lend a big thanks to anyone who came out to the booth, stopped by and picked something up or even just browsed!  And a credit to one of my best buds Brandon Deneault for shooting these photographs.

Now That’s What I Call Music…

Tonight our good friends in Boston based Westland lived their dream of sharing a stage with their idols, Blink 182, just outside of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.  In honor of their amazing achievement we have opened the doors to our virtual record shop right in our very own webstore.

To start we are releasing Westland’s debut full length album, Don’t Take It Personal.  And to wrap it up we are offering an autographed edition of The Jealous Sea’s rookie EP, Everything & Anything.

Head on over to the shop to pick up these gems before they are gone today and support local music!
